Abstract
Esophageal cancer accounts for approximately 2% of all malignant neoplasms. The choice of treatment for patients with esophageal cancer depends on the precise location of the tumor and its stage. Patients with tumors infiltrating blood vessels, the heart, lungs, and lymph nodes are candidates for definitive chemoradiotherapy. The aim of this study was to review irradiation techniques used in the treatment of esophageal cancer. This article presents conventional two-dimensional radiotherapy (2D-RT) and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) techniques. Advances in computerized treatment planning systems have contributed to the development of dynamic irradiation techniques, enabling the implementation of more advanced modalities such as intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), and proton therapy.
