Abstract

Ion channels are integral membrane proteins present on the plasma membrane as well as intracellular membranes. In the human genome, there are more than 400 known genes encoding ion channel proteins. One of their representatives is the Chloride Intracellular Chanel 1 (CLIC1). It regulates various neoplastic processes including cell proliferation, migration, invasion and angiogenesis. In the head and neck cancer, CLIC1 protein has an increased expression in tumor tissues and blood plasma in patients with oral and nasopharyngeal cancer. Therefore, it may be potentially used as a cancer biomarker.
